The city of Whittier, California is located just 12 miles from Los Angeles and is considered one of the Gateway Cities. Named after the celebrated poet, the city is refreshingly green and scenic with views of the mountains in the distance. Excellent access to the 605 and I-5 are available for those commuting to Los Angeles; however, nearby La Habra is best reached by surface streets.
Local sights include picturesque Turnbull Canyon and Whittier Narrows Recreational Area. The canyon includes several miles of hiking trails with moderate gains in elevation. The Narrows Recreational Area offers a wide variety of amenities for individuals and families who enjoy sports and the outdoors. Other parks and trails are available in the vicinity of the city or to the east toward La Habra.
Homes and real estate in Whittier are available in a wide range of prices, beginning from $240,000 to $3 million. The houses here are constructed in myriad styles, ranging from the traditional Southern California styles with Spanish influences to more modern or craftsman style offerings. While lot sizes tend to be small, often less than a half-acre, much of the available real estate includes superb landscaping, complete with palm trees.
The most budget-friendly homes in the area tend to have two to four bedrooms and either two or three baths. These are typically under $500,000, although newer or high-end construction exceeds this figure. At the lower end of the spectrum are cottage-like dwellings built early in the twentieth century, which can include many nice features, such as a fenced backyard. Typically, older houses have undergone periodic updates and renovations. Condos are also available in this range.
The largest and most luxurious homes in the city can include between five and nine bedrooms along with four to six baths. Many of these palatial estates start at $1.35 million, but some of the most gorgeous are priced closer to $3 million. Inside, potential residents will find granite or marble flooring, gourmet kitchens with custom cabinetry and luxury-grade appliances, and many other touches that add value and quality, not to mention enjoyment. Wrap-around porches are popular as well, thanks in part to the wonderful climate.
Southern California is home to some great places to live and to raise a family. This community, located close to both Los Angeles and to more nature-focused areas, is one of many great cities to call home.
